What happened
The title on the first slide of our card news kept getting cut off after two lines. Windy writes the copy and Art makes the images, but neither knew the other's title length limit. Six times in one week, a finished image had to be rebuilt from scratch.
The cause
The writer picked titles that read well, while the template had slots sized by character count. Nobody was wrong. There was simply no agreement between the two.
The fix
1. Count by hand how many characters fit in the first slide's title slot. Ours was 7 per line, 14 for two lines.
2. Write that number as one line at the very top of the writing bot's instructions.
3. Have it count the characters before handing over the title and note the count at the end.
First slide title: 14 characters or fewer including spaces. If longer, rewrite it, and add the count at the end, like (12 chars).
The result
Over two weeks we made 24 card news pieces, and redo work dropped from 6 times a week to 1. The one remaining case was an awkward line break. Because the count was written next to the title, a human skim caught problems at a glance, so review time also got shorter.
Try it today
Open the template you use now and write down how many characters each slot holds. Paste that note at the top of your writing bot's instructions, and you are done. Before fixing the image side, telling the writing side the number first turned out to be the fastest move.
